Showcasing Seismic Protection Solutions at CNIE 2024 in Cancun, Mexico
The vibrant city of Cancun, Mexico, recently hosted the XXIV Congreso Nacional de Ingenieria Estructural (CNIE 2024), where leading minds in structural engineering gathered to share advancements and innovations. Representing Kawakin Hoildings Group, Chih-Ching Lin, Manager of the Engineering Department - International Division, joined with the team from Dynamic Isolation Systems, Inc. (DIS), including Kerim Efe Ozcanli, M.Sc., Diego Enrique Taboada Saavedra, and Masaya Ietomi, President of DIS.
At the event, we showcased the expertise with an engaging booth display. Diego, DIS’s Seismic Engineer and International Business Development Manager, delivered an insightful presentation on Viscous Wall Dampers (VWDs)—a cutting-edge seismic protection technology widely adopted in Japan to enhance structural performance by reducing earthquake-induced damage. His presentation featured case studies from Japan, the United States, and Mexico, demonstrating the global impact of this innovative solution.
Viscous Wall Dampers (VWDs) are passive energy dissipation devices designed to mitigate seismic and wind-induced forces in buildings. By limiting inter-story drifts and preventing inelastic behavior in structural elements like beams and columns, VWDs minimize damage to both structural and non-structural components, ensuring critical facilities such as hospitals remain operational after seismic events.
Key features include:
・Energy Dissipation: VWDs consist of a narrow steel tank filled with viscous fluid and steel plates connected to different building floors. During seismic or wind events, the viscous fluid shears, effectively dissipating energy and reducing structural stress.
・Customizable Dimensions: Typically measuring 1.8–4.3 meters in height and 1.8–6.1 meters in width, VWDs can be tailored to meet the needs of diverse projects.
・Proven Versatility: Suitable for both new constructions and retrofits, VWDs have been successfully implemented in over 100 projects in Japan and are increasingly applied across North and Central America.
Participating in CNIE 2024 was an incredible opportunity to showcase the benefits of VWDs and engage in meaningful conversations with industry professionals. We are deeply grateful for the inspiring discussions and valuable connections we made during the event.
At Kawakin Holdings Group, we remain committed to advancing seismic protection solutions and fostering collaborations that contribute to safer and more resilient infrastructure worldwide.
